Job Description
Functioning as a member of the health care team, the Art Therapist uses active art making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship, effectively supporting patients' personal and relational treatment goals. Through the Art Therapy process, the Art Therapist helps patients and families express thoughts and feelings, improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and improve reality orientation. Art Therapists are responsible for supporting patients, and family members in the health care setting by providing developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive Art Therapy. The Art Therapist collaborates with other members of the health care team and plans Art Therapy sessions in accordance with patients' psychological/social/emotional needs, physical and cognitive capabilities, and personal interests.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Practice Art Therapy within the professional scope of practice as defined by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.
2. Provide comprehensive Art Therapy services for patients and their family members to support and improve their psychological, cognitive, emotional, social needs as referred by the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
3. Facilitate individual, group, and/or family Art Therapy sessions that include long-term and short-term goals based on assessment and ongoing observation.
4. Document Art Therapy sessions in patient charts in a timely and thorough manner, including assessments and progress notes.
5. Communicate effectively with members of the interdisciplinary health care team on clinical care planning and issues revealed through art therapy sessions.
6. Present educational in-services about Art Therapy within the medical center.
7. Develop and maintain an Art Therapy internship program through collaboration with local universities and supervise interns providing Art Therapy services appropriate to their level of experience and within their scope of practice.
8. Maintain accurate Art Therapy session statistics in performance improvement efforts.
9. Adhere to infection control and other safety standards in clinical practice and in the maintenance and ordering of creative art therapy resources.
10. Perform other related duties as assigned.
