Job Description:
Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
Conducting and coordinating internal administrative investigations. Developing and implementing policies and procedures for inmate grievance and inmate disciplinary processes. Overseeing administration of and advising staff on such processes. Conducting inspections of facilities. Responding to inmate grievances as the director’s designee. Responding to inmate disciplinary appeals in the capacity of the agency appeals board. Overseeing coordination of general operations, such as responses to correspondence provided to inmates, state agencies and the general public. Conducting legal research. Reviews and audits NDCS policies, programs and management practices. Directly supervising the inmate grievance coordinator, appeals board coordinator and operations coordinator.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field, plus four years’ corrections experience, of which one year must be in a supervisory position; OR Associates degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field plus six years’ experience, of which one year must be in a supervisory position; OR eight years corrections experience, of which one year must be in a supervisory position.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced post-secondary degree or law degree and three years progressively responsible experience working directly in the criminal justice system, two of which include supervising staff members. Experience researching correctional practices; writing policies, procedures; collecting, analyzing and presenting data. Experience with conducting investigations. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Other: Must have a valid driver's license. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, a drug test. Once employed, all incumbents must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services pre-service training program
