Summary: To coordinate Distance Learning (DL) programming in Minneapolis Adult education. To maintain learner enrollment and increase engagement in DL opportunities, and support the data coordinator with progress tracking and reporting. Select state approved DL platforms or methods, train and assist classroom teachers, and support LSS staff with recruitment, enrollment, orientation, instruction, assessment, data collection, and reporting.

 

Goal: To develop a viable, sustainable, and realistic distance learning (DL) program for MPS AE that is equally rigorous and valuable to students as the traditional classroom instruction. To provide high-quality supplemental educational opportunities to students who want additional learning opportunities beyond synchronous instruction to support their progress towards their educational goals. 

 

Rationale:

  • To support teachers and volunteers working with students engaging in distance learning opportunities

  • To facilitate the use of distance learning curriculum to supplement synchronous instruction

  • To support teachers and LSS to track progress and proxy hours of students completing distance learning lessons

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinating efforts

    1. Strategy 1.1: Work with leadership teams to expand DL programming to meet the needs of all levels of learners

    2. Strategy 1.2: Work with curriculum leads and teachers to use DL opportunities to support instruction

    3. Strategy 1.3: Be flexible with work time, considering that each month may be more or less busy

 

  1. Program Development

    1. Strategy 2.1: Provide leadership in the area of distance learning instruction within MPS AE, including offering an informed voice to Instructional and Curriculum leadership

    2. Strategy 2.3: Develop (and/or modify and adapt previously developed) DL implementation plans

    3. Strategy 2.4: Coordinate and provide training/professional development for teaching staff with DL opportunities

 

  1. Ongoing Learning

    1. Strategy 3.1: Seek out and participate in DL professional development

    2. Strategy 3.2: Complete MN ABE DL Training

    3. Strategy 3.3: Research approved DL platforms and potential new DL opportunities for their usefulness in meeting program and learner needs

 

Qualifications:

  • Required qualifications include:

    • Valid MN teaching license (K12 or ABE)

    • Comfortable with basic DL standards and instruction

    • Experience working with online learning platforms and with students with low digital literacy skills

    • Experience with teaching, preferably adults

    • Experienced and comfortable with a diverse range of native-speaking and ELL students

 

  • Preferred qualifications include:

    • Understanding of basic premises informing DL in MN ABE (types of delivery models, best practices, approved curricula, etc.) and state DL policy (including data recording and reporting requirements)

    • Working knowledge of DL in the following areas: Recruitment, Screening/Orientation, Instruction, Assessment, and Reporting

    • Ability to effectively address issues related to learner persistence and overcoming barriers (including learning disabilities)

    • Experience and training in Adult Basic Education (including ELL and HSE)

    • Familiarity with the SiD database

    • Experience using web technologies (e.g. taking online courses, leading or participating in discussion forums)

 

  • Preferred skills include:

    • Highly digitally literate/competent and confident troubleshooting tech platforms and computer issues 

    • Effective attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing competing demands

    • Ability to create, learn, adapt, and improve systems
