Provides nursing services and care coordination as outlined by the professional service agreement with the Waterloo Community Schools (WCSD). Delivers nursing care for patients and families and maintains a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health Waterloo within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers. Successful performance contributes to a holistic approach to the delivery of services, quality patient/family care, and a high level of satisfaction from patients and families. In conjunction with the Clinical Administrator II, plans, directs, facilitates, and evaluates school nursing services provided. Responsibilities Care Coordination - Coordinates all program required care necessary for students, staff, and community members in order to provide a healthy learning environment for all students in the Waterloo Community School District.
- Utilizes the delegation interpretive statement to guide best practice when supervising and delegating to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Health Assistants, in the schools.
- Coordinates referrals to students’ medical home or private healthcare provider
- Coordinates all program required care necessary for students, staff, and community members in order to provide a healthy learning environment for all students in the Waterloo Community School District.
- Utilizes the delegation interpretive statement to guide best practice when supervising and delegating to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Health Assistants, in the schools.
- Coordinates referrals to students’ medical home or private healthcare provider
- Assist the educational team in identification of learners needing accommodations or specialized instruction related to their health during the school day.
- Develops Individualized Health Plans (IHP’s), Emergency Plans (EP’s), and Emergency Evacuation Plans (EEP’s) for students in order to create a safe learning environment and educate the staff on health prevention and promotion.
- Provides direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process including pertinent and appropriate documentation through required school nurse documentation and the EMR at WCSD.
- Assures compliance with State mandated health requirements for school entry to include, but not limited to: Immunizations, dental, vision, physical, and lead screening.
Patient Care - Works with families, physicians, and Waterloo Community Schools.
- Uses the nursing process to promote positive health and development of students
- Assures all program-required health screenings are conducted and completed
- Maintains responsibility for the condition of assigned patients.
- Implements procedures for prevention of communicable diseases in the schools and alerts staff and parents/ guardians to health trends and issues
Education - Provides education to students, staff and families to promote health and safety.

Qualifications - Graduate of accredited nursing program
- One year nursing experience required.
- Demonstrates clinical competence in working with pediatric patients and their families.
- Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
- Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa
- Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
- Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web browser.
- Electronic medical record documentation
